Beanbags Bring Comfort to the Dentist Office
It’s that time of the year for you, time to go to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned. For many, going to the dentist is something that you dread. One thing is certain, not many people can say with confidence that they enjoy going to the dentist. Maybe it’s because of the hands and sharp tools working in your mouth that makes people dread the dentist? Maybe it’s because you’re worried that you’re going to have a cavity? Whatever your reason may be, I am sure most people can give you a reason why they do not like the dentist. Yet, it is a necessary thing to ensure that you have good dental hygiene and strong teeth. However, wouldn’t you be a little more comfortable and little bit more at ease if you were able to sit on a beanbag while getting examined by the dentist? Doesn’t everyone feel more relaxed when they are comfortable?
Even though many adults do not look forward to going to the dentist, children dread the dentist even more; especially young children. Anne Nugent Guighon recently wrote an article in the EDH magazine, a magazine for dentists, regarding positioning in a dental chair. In the article, Guighon states,” a small beanbag chair, perched in a patient chair, provides a safe, relaxing haven for children and can bring their bodies into an ideal working height.” I found this interesting because I do not remember sitting on a beanbag when I went to the dentist as a child and I wish I did! It definitely would have made the dentist a little less dreadful.
However, it does make sense for dentists to use this technique when they are working with small children. Children need to feel safe and be relaxed while in the chair so that the dentist can do their best work without worrying about whether they child is comfortable or not. Everyone is comfortable when they are sitting in a beanbag chair! Not only will putting a beanbag in the chair benefit the patient but it will also benefit the dentist. Sometimes, dentists have to hunch over to do their work if the child is small. Placing a beanbag in the chair will allow the child to be higher and will give the dentist better positioning to do their work.
Putting beanbags in the waiting area of a dentist office would be a good idea also. Many doctor’s offices have place beanbag chairs in their waiting areas to give their patients a comfortable place to wait. These bean bags help the patients to be relaxed and at ease when they get called back into a room. Personally, I think it would be a great idea for dentists to place bean bags in their waiting areas because so many people get anxious and are not comfortable in the dentist office.
Anna Nugent Guighon gives us yet another way to use beanbags. I must say, it is very interesting to learn that bean bags can be used in so many different ways and in different places. That is one of the benefits of beanbags, they are extremely versatile. Next time you go to the dentist or take your child to the dentist, maybe one of you will get the pleasure of sitting atop a beanbag.
