It was a busy week full of chats with designers, vendors and distributors specializing in academic interiors. Why would they want bean bags and foam furniture? For creative spaces, public areas, libraries, reading rooms… The list goes on (at least we believe it does).

We are working together with our friends @ Chameleon International  to develop a fun collection of modular cubes which will be unveiled next week in the Wired Pop-Up Store in Times Square. See that hand print?? That is an almost instantaneous reaction to my touch.

It may be a short while before we make this available for sale, but it will be worth the wait! Lucky for me, I snuck out a sample for the weekend!

We start with the remnants of the foam cut in our factory and much of the greater Atlanta area. The scrap is what is left between products cut out of a larger block, or bun as we call it. This scrap comes in many colors, shapes and sizes, but it is all new (not from used products!) polyurethane cuts. Once we have the foam, we sort it, clean it, and then the fun part… shred it!

Once the foam is shredded, it is ready for sorting into various sizes for use in our bags. Of course, our bags are rather large, so we needed a solution for shipping efficiently. Once again, we had a problem to solve. Solution: vacuum bags! That’s right, just like you see on TV. We compress both with vacuum and physical force. So, when you buy a bag, you get a kit. Open the kit, let it expand, and you have a full bag. Don’t worry. It’s easy!

The furniture composition in an average dorm room consists of a bed, desk, office chair and a love seat, papasan or futon. This is pretty limiting, but most people think that’s the best they can do given the small space. The desk and bed are standard issue with the room, so let’s think about the seating. College is a time for fun and sometimes friends crash in other friend’s rooms after a late night of socializing or studying. Futons are extremely uncomfortable, papasans don’t allow you to lay flat and a love seat is too short for most people.
